Ceramic braces

Ceramic braces are similar to metal braces, except that the main parts of the braces (brackets) are white or tooth-colored, while the other parts are metallic-gray. The active parts of the braces, the springs, can also be aesthetically white. Many people opt for ceramic braces because they are less visible on the teeth than metal braces.

This can be a huge advantage especially for people who work with the public and might be embarrassed by the visibility of metal braces. However, ceramic braces also have a few disadvantages, which you can read more about below, along with a comparison with metal braces, treatment effectiveness, treatment costs and oral hygiene maintenance.

Advantages and disadvantages of ceramic braces

Here's a list of the advantages and disadvantages of ceramic braces, compared in particular to traditional metal braces.

Advantages of ceramic braces

  • They are less visible than metal braces. The ceramic material used for braces can be white, similar to the color of your teeth, or with varying degrees of transparency. Because of this advantage, ceramic braces are especially preferred by adult patients;
  • Ceramic braces correctly position teeth faster than clear aligners such as Invisalign®. Ceramic braces take about 18 to 36 months to straighten teeth. With Invisalign braces, tooth movement is slower and visible results take longer. The effectiveness of the treatment depends on the patient wearing the braces (which are removed and reapplied by the patient, and are basically a mobile appliance, unlike braces which are bonded to the teeth and only removed at the end of the treatment). However, Invisalign treatment is not recommended for all patients, especially those with severe crowding and mal-occlusion;
  • Patients generally find ceramic braces more comfortable to wear than metal braces. The high-quality materials are non-abrasive, so they don't irritate the gums or sides of the mouth as much as metal braces do. After about a month, the discomfort of having braces in your mouth disappears;
  • You can choose your colors. Metal braces come in one color: gray (or shiny metallic silver, if available). The elastics that ceramic braces use are available in almost any color;
  • They do not interfere with imaging exams. Metal braces can interfere with signals on imaging tests, but ceramic braces produce notably less signal interference.

Disadvantages of ceramic braces

  • More expensive than metal braces. Although the difference is not significant, ceramic braces can reach 4800 Lei, and metal braces 4000 Lei;
  • They are not as strong as metal braces. Ceramic is a brittle material, so ceramic braces are more prone to fracture than metal braces. Also, removing the brackets from the enamel surface can lead to small cracks/fractures in the enamel;
  • They move teeth more slowly than metal braces. Because they are more fragile, broken ceramic brackets need to be replaced at each session and this can delay the teeth straightening process;
  • Can get stained when we consume beverages such as red wine, coffee, sodas with dyes. The elastics that secure the spring brackets to the brackets can also get stained easily and remain stained until replaced.

Are you a candidate for ceramic braces?

Ceramic braces are recommended for adults and children with a tooth eruption that is finalized or nearing completion. This ensures quick correction and less chance of bracket breakage due to tooth movement.

Ceramic braces are a good choice if you want your braces to be as inconspicuous as possible. Because they are usually white or tooth-colored, they are less noticeable. This makes ceramic braces ideal for straightening your teeth while you go to a full-time job or college and don't want to draw attention to it.

According to research, people are more likely to feel insecure about their teeth than any other physical trait besides weight. Given this, it's no wonder they - especially adults - are keen to choose braces that are almost invisible.

Do ceramic braces get stained?

Ceramic braces don't get stained easily, but the elastic ties used to secure the spring brackets can. Here are some tips to avoid staining the elastics of your ceramic braces:

  • Brush and floss after every meal. This helps remove food debris that could cause staining;
  • Avoid foods and drinks that leave stains or cause discoloration. Tomatoes, wine, coffee, tea, carbonated drinks, or sauces such as ketchup and mustard are foods known to stain denture elastics and teeth;
  • Don't smoke. Smoking can leave yellow stains on your teeth and all parts of your braces;
  • Do not use toothpaste for whitening. Bleaching agents can cause the exposed tooth surface to become whiter than the tooth under the bracket;
  • See your orthodontic specialist regularly. The doctor may replace stained ceramic brackets or rubber bands as needed.

What colors can I choose for my ceramic braces?

The color of each component of your ceramic braces can be changed during treatment. Components include:

Brackets - These bond to the teeth and are usually available in white or various shades close to that of natural teeth.

Springs - These wires curve around the teeth, connecting all the brackets and applying pressure on the teeth to straighten them. They are often available in silver, white or pearly colors to match light-colored brackets.

Elastic bands - Elastic bands attach to the wings of the brackets. They hold the spring in place, helping to adjust the position of the teeth due to the pressure generated by the spring. You can choose these elastics in almost any color imaginable. You can choose colors that match your skin tone or get creative and select a rainbow pattern all over your smile.

Ceramic braces can be a great choice if you don't want them to show on your teeth. Although not as strong as metal braces and may take longer to correct your bite, ceramic braces are much more comfortable and aesthetically pleasing.

Consult your dentist or orthodontist before opting for ceramic or metal braces - they may be more effective for your teeth, even if it's not your first choice.
