What is a Dental Implant?

A dental implant is a modern, effective solution for replacing missing teeth, with a success rate of over 98% worldwide. In Romania, more and more patients are opting for this treatment due to its functional and aesthetic benefits.

A dental implant is the only treatment that can replace one or more missing teeth, restoring 99% of the functionality and natural appearance of your teeth, according to the American Academy of Implant Dentistry (AADI). With proper maintenance, a dental implant can last up to 30 years or more.

The Impact of Tooth Loss. The absence of one or more teeth has a significant impact on quality of life. Missing teeth affect chewing function and the smile’s appearance, impacting both physical and mental health. Missing teeth can lead to jawbone deterioration, changes in facial structure, chewing difficulties, speech problems, and even lower self-confidence.

Structure and Role of a Dental Implant

Dental implants provide a long-term solution for replacing missing teeth. They consist of a titanium screw or other biocompatible material, which replaces the tooth root, and an abutment. After the implant integrates with the jawbone (a process known as osseointegration), it becomes securely fixed. Then, a prosthetic restoration is attached to the healed implant, either as individual crowns or as full fixed restorations.

The prosthetic restoration offers both the look and functionality of a natural tooth. After treatment, patients enjoy proper chewing, and facial harmony and smile aesthetics are restored.

The dental implant not only restores the smile’s aesthetics but also provides a long-term solution for optimal oral health. The global success rate for this treatment exceeds 98%, according to the US National Library of Medicine National Institutes of Health, making it a lifetime treatment solution.

In Romania, 7 out of 10 Romanians have at least one missing tooth, and 93% of patients who opted for dental implants are satisfied with their choice, according to a study conducted by DENT ESTET and market research agency 360insights.

Digital Implantology Master Plan

Predictability is essential when making dental health decisions, including dental implant treatments. It is crucial for an experienced medical team to provide clear and precise information about each treatment stage, so patients feel informed and secure throughout the process.

To ensure clarity and confidence for our patients, we created the Digital Implantology Master Plan – a unique protocol that explains each step in the dental implant treatment process. This Digital Implantology Plan upholds a consistent standard of excellence across all our clinics.

Steps in Dental Implant Treatment
Immediate Loading Dental Implants

1. Specialist Consultation

In this first step, the implantologist reviews the case, examines the patient’s medical history, discusses their expectations, and explains available treatment options through a personalized plan. To succeed with the immediate load procedure, the doctor must clinically assess if the conditions are right to stabilize the implant immediately after insertion.

2. Clinical Evaluation and Immediate Restoration Planning

The designated implantologist conducts a thorough clinical evaluation, using radiographs and CBCT imaging to determine candidacy for the immediate loading procedure. Dental imaging provides essential information on bone quality, crucial for the implant's stability after insertion. Additionally, based on a 3D intraoral scan, the doctor determines the optimal implant position, while advanced lab technicians from the ASPEN® Dental Technology Lab plan the custom prosthetic restoration.

3. Implant Placement and Immediate Loading of Temporary Crown

On the day of surgery, the implantologist completes several steps in one session:

  • If necessary, extracts the irreparable tooth to be replaced.
  • Places the dental implant, either in the pre-healed location or in the extraction site.
  • Immediately after implantation, the implantologist assesses implant stability using the Osstell Beacon device, ensuring conditions are suitable for placing the temporary dental crown without delay.

The device quickly determines implant stability, providing an accurate ISQ stability index based on RFA technology, backed by over 1,400 studies. The Osstell Beacon also facilitates predictable results and reduces treatment time by indicating the optimal moment for implant loading.

  • A temporary crown is immediately attached to the implant, crucial for aesthetic rehabilitation and maintaining gum contour during the healing process.

Starting from the day of surgery, you can enjoy a functional dental restoration that looks and feels just like a natural tooth. Following the immediate loading dental implant procedure, the implantologist provides the patient with specific home care instructions to support healing. Additionally, the patient continues to be monitored by the medical team and Patient Care Coordinator.

4. Postoperative Checkup

About 10–14 days after the procedure, a follow-up consultation is scheduled to assess the progress of osseointegration (the formation of bone tissue around the dental implant) and ensure proper healing.

5. Digital Impression and Consultation for the Permanent Crown

After 1–4 months* from the initial procedure (*duration varies by case and implant type*), the implant and gums are ready for placement of the final prosthetic restoration created in the ASPEN® Advanced Dental Technology Lab. During this consultation, the prosthetic specialist uses state-of-the-art digital technologies such as the Trios 3Shapev intraoral scanner, MODJAW® 4D scanner, or RAYFace® facial scanner to create a digital impression for the new prosthetic work.

The obtained digital data is sent to the DENT ESTET laboratory, renowned for the natural aesthetics and exceptional quality of its prosthetic work.

6. Fitting and Cementation of the Permanent Crown

At this stage, the prosthetic specialist replaces the temporary restoration with the final one, crafted from high-performance, biocompatible, and durable materials. A fitting session may be necessary before cementing the permanent crown to ensure it is comfortable, functional, and meets all aesthetic requirements.

7. Dental Implant Maintenance

To preserve the excellent results achieved, maintaining proper oral hygiene at home is essential. Throughout the healing period and after the permanent restoration is placed, it’s important to follow your Implantologist's oral care instructions carefully.

In addition to brushing, auxiliary hygiene practices (such as using oral douche, dental floss, and mouthwash) are also necessary. Regular check-ups and preventive prophylaxis sessions every six months, or as recommended by your doctor, help ensure the ongoing health and longevity of your implant.

By following these guidelines, you benefit from DENT ESTET’s Quality Assurance Certificate for all treatments completed at our clinics.

Classic Dental Implant

1. Consultation and Examination

The Implantologist examines the case, reviews the patient’s medical history, discusses their expectations, and explains the available treatment options through a personalized treatment plan.

2. Clinical Evaluation and Planning

The Implantologist performs a thorough clinical evaluation using X-rays and CBCT scans to determine the quality of the bone that will support the future implant. If necessary, additional procedures for bone reconstruction (bone grafting) may be recommended.

3. Tooth Extraction

If the implant is needed to replace a non-recoverable tooth, the tooth will be extracted under anesthesia. The area will require a healing period of a few months, depending on the case. During this time, it is essential to follow the medical recommendations for home care.

4. Dental Implant Surgery

The procedure is done under local or general anesthesia. The dentist opens the gum to place the implant screw (which acts as an artificial root) and then the abutment. During the osteointegration period, there will be a temporary gap in the smile. A temporary prosthetic solution, such as a provisional crown, may be used to maintain aesthetics.

Depending on the treatment plan and the patient's oral health, the osteointegration process may take between 2 and 6 months. During this time, it’s crucial to follow the doctor's advice on diet and oral hygiene to ensure the success of the dental implant treatment.

5. Postoperative Check-up and Suture Removal

About 10-14 days after the procedure, the patient returns to the clinic for a follow-up visit and suture removal.

6. Impression and Production of the Final Crown

Once the implant area has fully healed, the final prosthetic stage can begin.

During the consultation, the prosthodontist uses modern digital technologies, such as the Trios 3Shape® intraoral scanner, the MODJAW® 4D scanner, or the RAYFace® facial scanner, to capture the digital impressions needed to design the prosthetic work.

The digital data is then sent to the ASPEN® laboratory.

7. Fitting and Cementation of the Final Crown

To complete the treatment plan, the patient returns for a visit with the prosthodontist. The final prosthetic work is fitted, allowing the doctor to make any necessary adjustments. Once all the final details are perfected, the definitive crown is cemented onto the implant.

Now, the prosthetic restoration is complete, providing a functional and aesthetic solution.

8. Dental Implant Maintenance

To maintain the excellent results achieved, it is essential to keep good oral hygiene at home. During the healing period and after receiving the final prosthetic work, it’s important to follow the dentist’s instructions regarding oral care.

In addition to brushing, auxiliary hygiene practices (such as using oral douche, dental floss, and mouthwash) are also necessary. Regular check-ups and preventive prophylaxis sessions every six months, or as recommended  by the dentist, are also essential.

This way, patients can enjoy the benefits of the Quality Assurance Certificate for all treatments carried out at DENT ESTET clinics.

Contraindications for Dental Implants

Ensuring a successful dental implant treatment requires meticulous planning, careful postoperative care, and long-term maintenance to preserve results.

Certain medical conditions, such as uncontrolled diabetes, bone system disorders, and certain cancers, may exclude patients from implant treatments. However, viable solutions can often be found if chronic conditions are well-controlled and the patient’s health is stable.

It is therefore essential to provide the DENT ESTET implantologist with a complete medical history and recent blood test results before the procedure. Postoperatively, patients should avoid consuming hot or hard foods, smoking, or drinking alcohol to promote healing.

1. Guidelines for Postoperative Care

Immediately after the implant procedure, patients should follow these home care instructions to reduce complications and extend implant longevity:

Reduce swelling by applying a cold compress to the cheek.

Adhere to prescribed medication: follow your doctor’s instructions for pain, inflammation, and antibiotics.

Avoid touching the operated area: refrain from touching the implant site with your tongue to prevent inflammation.

Oral hygiene: resume brushing as per your doctor’s guidelines, using a soft-bristle brush and avoiding electric toothbrushes.

Diet: avoid hot foods and beverages while the anesthesia is active. Refrain from coffee and alcohol for the first seven days to prevent bleeding risk. Stick to soft foods until sutures are removed.

No smoking: quitting smoking is advised, as it can increase the risk of complications and implant failure.

Regular follow-up visits: keep to the scheduled check-ups to monitor implant progress.

2. Long-term Care of Dental Implants

Treat implants like natural teeth: brush twice daily, use dental floss, mouthwash, and an oral irrigator to prevent plaque and tartar buildup, which are associated with peri-implantitis risk.

Regular dentist visits for check-ups and professional cleaning are essential to maintaining implant health. Failure to follow medical recommendations may adversely impact treatment success.

3. Signs of Implant Loss

Globally, the success rate for implants is 98%. Though complications are rare, contact your dentist immediately if you experience any of the following: severe pain or discomfort, gum inflammation, gum recession, implant or crown mobility, difficulty chewing, or pus around the implant.

Frequently Asked Questions About Dental Implants

What factors determine the cost of dental implant treatment?

A dental implant is a lifelong investment, so it’s important to make a well-informed decision. Consider the following factors when choosing dental implant treatment:

  • The experience and qualifications of the dentist are crucial for treatment safety.
  • Medical exams and dental imaging required to ensure treatment success.
  • Ensure the implant system chosen is backed by scientific research and proven results.
  • Dental implant treatment includes a prosthetic stage, with costs varying based on the type of prosthetic accessories and crown. These can have different properties depending on the materials and processes used in the dental laboratory.

At DENT ESTET, all dental implant treatments are carried out using premium materials, digital technologies, and safe protocols. We never compromise on quality, offering the best available implant types from top manufacturers. While prices may vary between clinics, our highly trained implant specialists work exclusively with our own dental laboratory to deliver the best possible results.

When is dental implant treatment recommended?

If you have lost at least one tooth or have a tooth that cannot be saved with other conservative treatments, your dentist's first recommendation will likely be a dental implant.

Am I a suitable candidate for dental implants?

Adults with stable oral health and general health conditions are suitable candidates. At DENT ESTET, we perform rigorous evaluations to ensure suitability. If we identify any risk factors that could affect treatment, we will explain them fully from the start.

What is the best dental implant?

Depending on each patient's clinical situation, the dentist will recommend the available options. For optimal results and a shorter healing period, it’s best to choose the highest-performing dental implants, typically premium options. These are based on years of research regarding durability, rapid osseointegration, and aesthetics.

Are dental implants permanent?

Dental implants require meticulous surgery and dedicated oral hygiene to be maintained over time. With the right care and proper oral hygiene, they can last a lifetime. However, like natural teeth, implants are susceptible to bacterial buildup around the gums if not cared for, leading to gum disease, bleeding, and gum recession, which can expose the implant threads. Over a person’s life, medical conditions affecting blood health, bone density, or rare issues like cancer can impact the surrounding bone and reduce implant longevity.

At DENT ESTET, we thoroughly assess your oral and general health to inform you of any relevant risk factors. When you choose DENT ESTET for your dental implant, you can be confident that you’re in safe hands. Contact us to discuss your candidacy for implants.

How long does it take for a dental implant to heal?

The healing period for a dental implant typically ranges from 4 to 6 months, depending on the patient's genetic makeup and bone regeneration capacity. However, you can resume daily activities immediately following the procedure. Straumann has developed advanced technologies that accelerate osseointegration—the fusion of the implant with the jawbone—providing long-term stability and predictability. Straumann implants, known for their innovative surfaces like SLActive®, enhance quick implant integration, ensuring efficient healing and exceptional results.

What are the risks of implant rejection?

Using premium dental implant systems made from biocompatible materials, combined with a qualified dentist’s experience and a thorough case evaluation, will minimize the risk of implant loss. Maintaining proper oral hygiene at home, along with periodic check-ups and professional dental cleaning every six months, are also crucial for implant longevity.

Advanced Technology for Dental Implant Procedures

We use the latest innovations in dental implantology to provide the most effective and comfortable treatment possible. From premium implants like Straumann® and Nobel® to advanced digital techniques for precise planning and insertion, we ensure you receive everything needed for a beautiful, healthy smile.
