
When drawing up the treatment plan, the specialist dentist selects the best procedures to save your teeth and restore your long-term oral health. Moreover, modern endodontics allows the interior of the tooth to be visualised and magnified to such a degree that it can offer the patient treatment solutions with a high degree of predictability.
The possibilities offered by the dental microscope, particularly through its modern accessories such as the intraoral camera, have expanded the limits of visualising the inside of the tooth. For this reason, the dental microscope is used in numerous types of dental procedures, including endodontic surgery (apical resections and more).
In endodontics, the dental microscope is used to save the tooth by treating the infection inside the tooth in cases where untreated dental caries has progressed aggressively. In this way, the endodontist can operate with maximum precision and control over the affected area. We can even say that the endodontist performs a conservative procedure designed to protect healthy tissue and preserve as much of the tooth’s natural structure as possible.
An increasing number of endodontists are opting to perform root canal treatments using a microscope, as the success rate is 90%, whereas statistics show that with conventional treatment, this figure is around 50–60%.
The microscope helps the dentist achieve much greater visibility of the affected area and maintain control during the procedure.
Dr Vlad Platon, an endodontist at DENT ESTET, explains in detail what this type of procedure involves, outlining all the benefits a patient can enjoy if they choose treatment using a dental microscope:
“Firstly, the microscope ensures precision during the procedure and improves the safety of the work carried out. Another advantage for the patient is that even the smallest areas of decay can be treated, and the duration of the procedure is reduced. The microscope enlarges the field of view and helps us observe details of the tooth’s structure that we cannot see with the naked eye,” says Dr Vlad Platon.
In the case of physiognomic fillings, up to 100% of the affected dental tissue can be removed. The microscope provides the dentist with a much clearer view of the interdental spaces, which helps us to achieve a correct physiognomic filling in direct contact with the healthy dental tissue of the tooth.
Furthermore, shaping the anatomical filling using the microscope ensures that the subsequent restoration of the tooth using the anatomical filling is both aesthetic and, above all, functional.
“The dental microscope helps us remove the decay and protect the pulp chamber. By magnifying the image and providing the necessary illumination, we have the visibility required to remove only the affected tissue,” explains Dr Platon.
