When are braces necessary?

Braces have become increasingly popular in our country. Most people wonder whether they or their children should wear braces, often just for aesthetic reasons. But there are cases where braces are recommended by your orthodontist to improve long-term oral health.

Braces - fad or necessity?

Treatment with braces can only be performed after a thorough check-up. The orthodontist will ask questions about your health, conduct a clinical examination, perform a set of tests for orthodontic purposes consisting of a digital scan of your teeth (digital dental X-ray), photographs of your face and teeth and teleradiographs. Based on this information, a customized treatment plan is made.

There are many cases in which patients only discover that they have a problem with an incorrect bite when they come to the dentist's office. At that point, treatment with braces becomes necessary for functional reasons.

The benefits of wearing braces are numerous, with direct implications for overall health. Orthodontic treatment corrects mal-positioned teeth and malocclusion, improves chewing and smile aesthetics, prevents joint pain and dysfunction, and increases self-esteem.

4 reasons to choose braces

Improved oral health

Children and adults who have crowded or crooked teeth often have problems with brushing and flossing correctly. Because toothbrushes and dental floss cannot clean the interdental spaces, they develop bacteria that in the long term form tooth decay, gingivitis or lead to halitosis.

Fitting braces, regardless of the type of braces, guide the teeth to the correct area making long-term smile care much easier.

Improved pronunciation

Does your child have difficulty with pronunciation? This could be caused by their inability to open their mouth in the correct position. Teeth that are not correctly aligned on the arch can cause problems when trying to move the mouth. In children, if speech therapy doesn't help, aligning the teeth and correcting the bite or jaw may lead to improved speech.

Improved bite

When biting into food, the alignment of the teeth is a decisive factor in the success of the action. Their placement on the arch determines the forces acting on the jaw and on specific teeth. After treatment with braces you will be able to bite more easily and avoid jaw pain.

Less toothache

People who have teeth that are incorrectly aligned on the dental arch can suffer from a variety of dental pain. They may accidentally bite their tongue or even the side walls of the oral cavity. Depending on the severity of the case, swallowing (deglutition) discomfort and impairment of quality of life in general may occur. Therefore, treatment with dental braces can considerably improve the life of people suffering from daily toothache.

Of course, braces are used for aesthetic purposes and to improve your physical appearance and, therefore, your self-esteem.

If you have decided to undergo orthodontic treatment, your doctor will recommend the type of braces that are best for you. Braces can be fixed (with wires and brackets) or mobile, similar to a mouthguard.
