Specialist Dentist - DENTAL PROSTHETICS
Dr. Adelin Radu is a specialist in dental prosthetics and an Assistant Professor at the "Dental Prosthetics Technology" Department of the "CAROL DAVILA" University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Bucharest. His passion for this field grew throughout his years of study as he realized that the world could change one smile at a time.
He finds the mission of restoring the aesthetics and functionality of a smile challenging due to its subjective and emotional components. The satisfaction arises when "smiles are reborn right before my eyes" and when he sees happiness on the faces of his patients.
In his spare time, he reads books on history, theology, philosophy, and personal development literature, aiming to understand the complexity of the world he lives in. He is also drawn to the arts, studying various musical instruments, performing in bands, and conducting choirs. Moreover, he is constantly involved in public speaking projects, loves listening to and telling stories, but his best form of relaxation is spending time with his family.
I am passionate about the challenge of complex oral rehabilitation, the need to master the functional aspect to build the aesthetic part, and the skillful blend of the two. I believe that behind every unsmiling face lies the potential for a transformation with a happy ending.
I am an advocate of minimally invasive dentistry, with biomimetic restorations that respect tissue biology and naturalness. I am convinced that nature is the best teacher.
The stories behind the smiles.
The oldest patient I treated was 86 years old at the time of treatment. Over time, they had a series of bridge works that failed one by one, affecting a tooth or two each time. Eventually, the only solution to meet both functional and aesthetic needs was rehabilitation with a fixed implant-supported prosthesis, both upper and lower.
For the first time in a long while, the patient felt confident to reveal his smile, and believe me when I say that I can feel it, even through the phone, every time he calls me out of the blue to thank me for what I accomplished. This is the most beautiful reward of my work!
I would simply say: Digital dentistry doesn’t turn bad doctors into good doctors, but it does turn good doctors into excellent ones.
If I were to define my work through the lens of technology, I could say without hesitation that technology allows me to practice what we call Comprehensive Digital Dentistry, which is holistic dentistry based on detailed planning and allows me to build always having the final outcome clear from the beginning.
Smile simulation is mandatory!
Just as you can't build a house without an architect's project, you can't accurately and predictably restore function and aesthetics without starting from a project. Smile simulation is precisely this – a project, a sketch of the shape, size, position of the future teeth, and their relationship with the surrounding tissues.
There is a saying that you can't treat what you can't see, and Digital Smile Design precisely opens our eyes to see treatment possibilities. I had the great pleasure of learning from the one who conceived this approach – Dr. Christian Coachman. In my opinion, a visionary, a mountain of passion and dedication, who literally infects you with his spirit. From him, I learned that there is no aesthetic treatment that doesn't consider the patient's facial frame, which is why everything we do is Facially Driven Dentistry.
To achieve aesthetics, we must also check function and the health of the surrounding tissues – we do not practice Single Tooth Dentistry, but Comprehensive Dentistry. So, "I don't know how others are," but as for me, I have fully embraced this way of working and can say that the results I achieve are smiles full of naturalness and harmony.
Studies conducted in Western European countries and the United States show in black and white that people with a beautiful and healthy smile have a more active and fulfilling social life, earn more, are perceived as smarter, etc.
Often, prosthetic rehabilitations, whether we are talking about crowns or veneers, are perceived as a luxury. However, people should realize that most of the time, recommendations for complex oral rehabilitation are a medical decision with a single purpose: restoring health. This is my goal, this is my calling as a doctor, and I believe we are living in a moment of paradigm shift even in our country.
Absolutely yes! Biologically speaking, teeth wear down as we age, making them appear more yellow. The enamel, the white, translucent part that covers the tooth on the outside, wears down and leaves the dentin, the yellowish part inside, exposed or much more visible. So, from a purely technical point of view, moving towards a lighter color, we gain years. Not to mention the shape of the teeth or their exposure in the smile.
I have a patient with whom I developed a very nice relationship, who did a lot of convincing work with me, as she absolutely wanted much whiter teeth than what she had and certainly much whiter than what I imagined would suit her. However, I gave in to her preference, and now, looking back, I can say I would have regretted it deeply if I had won the dispute. This patient, an extremely cheerful person with a bright face, carries her new smile extraordinarily, which rejuvenates her and hides the years on her ID, showing only the ones in her soul.
The digital workflow protocol allows us to preview the shapes of the teeth first in software, in the case of rehabilitations. Subsequently, together with the patient, we choose the appropriate shapes that offer naturalness to the smile. Nowadays, the sky is the limit!
Obviously, from the picture to reality, the project must pass through the hands of skilled dental technicians. As a doctor in the DENT ESTET team, I am happy to work with ASPEN DIGITAL SMILE DESIGN, a laboratory with extremely talented, empathetic people, with solid training, who have the ability to breathe life into the prosthetic works they create.
A dental crown is indicated whenever the surface of the tooth is extremely affected or if its structure is compromised, such as, for example, a root canal-treated tooth. A dental veneer represents a minimally invasive restoration that helps us usually correct issues related to shape, size, color. There is no better option as each addresses a specific type of problem.
My teaching activity involves interacting with second-year students in the "Dental Prosthetics Technology" discipline. In simple terms, it means we talk about everything related to prosthetics and dental aesthetics – from veneers, crowns, and inlay/onlay, to bridges and fixed or removable prostheses. We try to follow the entire technological process, from intraoral preparation, material selection, and creating the respective work in the laboratory, to fixing the final piece. It is the first rehabilitation subject studied in university.
I could say I am a boringly simple person. My favorite activity in my spare time is spending as much time as I can with my family. Beyond that, I love to sing, write, and read. I am passionate about everything related to how the mind works and people.
