Primary Physician – GENERAL DENTISTRY
Specialist Physician – PERIODONTOLOGY
Certified in IMPLANTOLOGY
DOCTOR OF MEDICAL SCIENCES
Dr. Alexandru Georgescu is the first doctor to join the DENT ESTET team back in 2002 when the clinic was beginning its expansion in the Romanian dental market. For Dr. Georgescu, dentistry is more than a profession; it is a lifestyle, as evidenced by his unwavering passion even after 20 years.
Dr. Georgescu became a Primary Physician in General Dentistry in 2008 and earned his Doctorate in Medical Sciences from the “Carol Davila” University of Medicine in Bucharest. In 2011, he became a Specialist in Periodontology. He furthered his training with a postgraduate program in Reconstructive Surgery of Periodontal and Peri-Implant Tissues at the San Raffaele University of Dental Medicine in Milan in 2019. In 2023, he completed the “Current Concepts in American Dentistry 2021-2023” program, focusing on Implantology and Oral Surgery at New York University (NYU).
With 18 years of experience in dental implant treatments and complex oral rehabilitations using All-on-4 systems, he is the first doctor from Romania to become a member of the International Team for Implantology, the world’s most renowned association of implantology professionals.
A promoter of innovation and digitization in dentistry, Dr. Georgescu mentors the next generation of dentists in complex dental implant techniques. He is involved in academic activities, serving as Study Club Director in Romania for the International Team for Implantology (ITI) and has been a Straumann mentor since 2016.
Dr. Georgescu is also a Nobel Biocare Ambassador and a member of the DENT ESTET Implantology Division, coordinated by Prof. Dr. Paulo Maló, who revolutionized global implantology with the development of the All-on-4® concept.
For Dr. Alexandru Georgescu, dentistry transcends the status of a mere profession, becoming a true way of life. Joining the DENT ESTET team in 2002, Dr. Georgescu has demonstrated unwavering passion for medical science over the past two decades. He believes that true vocation in dentistry lies in the meticulous blend of science with new practices and technologies, all aimed at the noble goal of restoring patients' health.
In his vision, continuous development, both personally and professionally, is essential. Integrating cutting-edge technology and ethical principles into his daily practice allows him to build lasting and ethical relationships with patients. Beyond his professional dedication, Dr. Georgescu finds balance and inspiration in nature, being an avid yachting enthusiast, which he perceives as a way of life. This deep connection with nature provides him with the energy and enthusiasm necessary to excel in his career.
As a mentor and educator, Dr. Georgescu embraces the role of guiding and inspiring the new generation of dentists. As StudyClub Director for Romania and Straumann mentor within the International Team for Implantology (ITI), he consistently promotes innovation and excellence in implantology, thus ensuring his patients receive the most advanced and effective treatments available.
For the community of dentists in Romania, ITI represents a fundamental pillar of professional development and international exchange of experience. Through the ITI Study Club meetings in Bucharest, dentists gain access to the latest scientifically validated implant treatment methods from the international community. Participation in these meetings offers the unique opportunity to present clinical cases, receive feedback, and learn from the experiences of their peers. For upcoming sessions, we are focusing on exploring and implementing innovations in oral surgery, with an emphasis on the revolutionary Smile in a Box™ concept from Straumann®, which promises greater comfort, precision, and safety for patients.
I am particularly interested in full oral rehabilitations using 4 or 6 implants. Each implant manufacturer has given different names to this protocol. For instance, with Straumann, we refer to ProArch, while with Nobel, it is known as All-on-4. I focus on these two manufacturers, both currently headquartered in Switzerland, just like ITI, and I don't think this is a coincidence. Both manufacturers invest considerable resources in research, and their implant systems are scientifically validated.
I joined the team formed by Oana Taban back in 2002 and have been part of the entire evolution of what DENT ESTET represents today. I have greatly appreciated the openness to new ideas and innovation. She has always aimed for us to have the latest technologies and to stay up-to-date with the newest treatment methods. As a doctor, you want to be in a team that is continuously evolving, never stagnant.
Each such moment, when a new technology becomes available on the market, is both a challenge and an opportunity. It's a challenge because, if until that point you had extensive experience and competence in offering high-level treatments with an analog method, suddenly, you have to start from scratch and become a learner again with a new system. You begin a new learning curve, which can take weeks or months to reach a level of excellence with the new technology, during which you might face frustration or a feeling of regression.
However, we must put the efforts into perspective and keep in mind the greater good of the patient, who benefits from the increased comfort offered by digital technologies. For example, with the introduction of the intraoral scanner, the advantage for the patient was clear – it's much more comfortable to scan digitally than to take impressions with traditional impression materials.
First of all, I want to mention Mari Grecu Pîrvan, the dental assistant I have been working with since the beginning. Any doctor knows that the medical assistant you team up with can take some of the burdens off your shoulders, which is why I greatly appreciate being able to rely on her.
Regarding colleagues I work with interdisciplinarily, over time, as a periodontist, I have collaborated with orthodontists and other colleagues such as Erika Vasilescu or Vanda Popa on endodontic treatments. Additionally, my wife, Dana Georgescu, handles the prosthetics part in many of my implant cases.
Without a doubt, the progress and development of implantology as a science have been integral to our professional growth. I performed my first implant treatment in 2006, and before that, I prepared through an implantology competency program and by working alongside more experienced doctors. My first mentor in implantology was Dr. Puiu Nicolescu, who was part of the first generation of doctors trained to offer treatments with modern dental implant systems. I should mention that the first implantology department in our country was established at the military hospital around the year 2000.
The available technologies have changed significantly. Back then, we had panoramic or periapical X-rays, and CBCT was accessible only under special conditions. Nowadays, radiology and dental imaging devices have diversified. Currently, CBCT is a must in implantology; instead of traditional impressions, we now have intraoral scanners. We can create digital guides for both the surgical and prosthetic stages. Moreover, implant systems have evolved and become more advanced every year.
Any periodontist can be an implantologist, but every implantologist must be a periodontist. Dentistry is already a medical specialty distinct from general medicine, and by further dividing it into even more niche specializations, we sometimes risk losing the overall perspective on treatments. As an implantologist, I believe it is imperative to view dental health holistically. Applying an implant is futile if you do not also consider the supporting tissue, namely the gums, which need to be healthy for the treatment to be successful in the long term.
Spending time in nature always restores balance and heals you. I chose yachting because, in the end, it can be a way of life.
