About

Dr Cristina Erciulescu, a specialist in Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopaedics at DENT ESTET & DENT ESTET 4 Kids, graduated from the Faculty of Dentistry at the “Carol Davila” University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Bucharest, and subsequently completed her residency programme at the Faculty of Dentistry in Târgu Mureș.

His journey in the medical field began out of a love for people, and dentistry is the surest way to ensure they have a healthy smile.

“If I had to choose again, I would choose dentistry without a moment’s hesitation.”

Dr Cristina Erciulescu is a perfectionist and gladly embraces the challenges encountered in this profession, as she associates them with energy and professional development. She believes that three factors must be harmoniously combined to ensure the success of a treatment: practical and theoretical knowledge, attention to detail, and communication skills.

Dr Cristina Erciulescu told us that she feels honoured to be able to smile alongside her patients every day: “For me, every patient is unique, and the trust we place in one another motivates me to find the best treatment.”

She enjoys walks in nature, reading, watching documentaries, cycling or running. When it comes to hobbies, travelling is at the top of her list, as she loves discovering the ancient art and history of the places she visits.

Philosophy

Our professional and personal lives can coexist in harmony when we find fulfilment in both, as they influence one another. In my professional work, I am deeply inspired by the ‘Hippocratic Oath’, which provides guidance in my practice as a specialist orthodontist.

Although the life of a doctor can present challenges, approaching these moments with honesty and respect for patients helps me maintain a personal balance as well.

Questions

1. Please briefly describe your career path and what has motivated you over the years to pursue dentistry.

Choosing a career at a young age is a difficult decision for all of us. We wonder whether we will be good at it and whether we will excel in our chosen field, but when we approach it with passion and dedication, these concerns resolve themselves. My decision was by no means simple, given that I had no one in my family who was a dentist. It was more of an intuition that I followed without hesitation, a choice made in a moment of clarity, feeling that this was the right path. Over time, I realised it was the right choice, as it all turned into a true passion. When you invest in what you do, the activity is no longer perceived as work, but becomes a continuous process of doing and practising. In my case, the desire to build small things led me towards this branch of dentistry.

2. What do you consider to be your key strength in your field?

I believe that a competent dentist must, first and foremost, show empathy towards patients and communicate with them in an accessible and open manner. It is essential for the dentist to possess meticulous technical skills, given the complexity of the work involved. Furthermore, ambition and a desire for constant improvement are crucial to providing patients with innovative and effective solutions. In this field, professional development is an ongoing process that never ends. I would like to emphasise that effective communication between dentist and patient is fundamental to the success of treatment.

3. Do you think that orthodontic treatment can make a significant difference to a patient’s life? How?

Braces not only correct the position of the teeth, thereby improving dental and facial aesthetics, but also offer numerous benefits in other areas:

  • Improved speech: By reshaping the dental arches, speech becomes clearer and more fluent.

  • Prevention of tooth decay and gum disease: Correcting crowded teeth helps reduce the risk of tooth decay and gum problems.

  • Correcting the bite: This improves chewing efficiency.

  • Resolving breathing problems: In some cases, braces can help improve breathing.

  • Combating bruxism: Braces can correct teeth grinding and help reduce tension and pain in the jaw area.

  • Restoring psychological comfort and self-confidence: A key aspect is dental alignment, which not only improves the patient’s appearance but also their emotional well-being.

Although wearing braces may be associated with discomfort in the early days, most patients gradually get used to them. By the end of treatment, the results achieved make every moment of discomfort worth the effort.

4. Tell us about a happy moment in your career, or one that you look back on fondly.

I have had the pleasure of enjoying many wonderful experiences throughout my career, but one of the most memorable so far was the feeling I had after completing the implantology course. It broadened my horizons regarding the use of innovative treatments for the benefit of the patient and, in addition, gave me enormous professional satisfaction on top of what I had previously experienced. Authenticity defines my relationship with patients; I am open and eager to provide information, and I am positive and friendly.

5. Looking back on your career, what is the achievement you are most proud of?

I remember with great emotion the first set of metal braces I fitted during my residency. I can say with certainty that all my nerves vanished the moment I began the fitting, with all my attention focused on the necessary steps. I was pleasantly surprised by the result, and the treatment went very well, with the patient delighted to have achieved the desired aesthetic outcome.

6. Is success a relative concept in dentistry?

The success of a treatment depends on numerous factors. I would like to emphasise here that careful documentation of each case, constant communication throughout the entire process and, last but not least, the patient’s cooperation are essential for achieving success in orthodontics.

It is important for the dentist to take the time to explain to the patient the issues they are facing, as well as the proposed treatments, using simple and easy-to-understand language. This will give the patient added confidence and peace of mind.

Communication must be ongoing throughout the treatment, including at the end of it, emphasising the importance of regular check-ups, even after major dental treatments have been completed. In the doctor-patient relationship, it is not only the doctor’s therapeutic role that is fundamental, but also the patient’s adherence to the recommendations and prescribed treatments, alongside regular attendance at check-ups.

7. Is there any advanced technology that you couldn’t imagine dental treatment without? Why is it important to you?

Innovation is the key word, and adapting to technological advances is essential in the field of dentistry. We live in a fast-paced world, and patients are looking for quick and as painless solutions as possible. In this context, I would like to mention aligner treatments, which represent an elegant and discreet option, perfect for patients who do not wish to wear braces during treatment.

More and more people are choosing these aligners, and I currently have patients from all over the country, given that this system does not require mandatory monthly check-ups. This is a major advantage for those who live, work or travel frequently. The results are spectacular and are achieved in a shorter time than with traditional braces, without causing discomfort. Furthermore, oral hygiene becomes much easier, as the aligners can be removed. Another technology that facilitates treatment is digital scanning, which significantly reduces the time needed for impressions and, most importantly, offers greater comfort to patients.

8. How can a person be categorised, Cristina Erciulescu, when they leave their medical equipment behind?

I try to maintain a balance between my professional and personal life, so that I can stay physically and mentally healthy, alongside my family and friends. This helps me to enjoy the rewards that both my career as an orthodontist and my everyday life bring me. I am an open person and I smile a lot. I spend my free time with family or friends, with whom we often visit beautiful places where we recharge our batteries.
