Philosophy

Paediatric dentistry is more than just professional training and day-to-day practice. When you work with children, you become an educator, a psychologist and a keen observer of their development. This helps me to build a close relationship with my patients and gain their trust. It’s a natural process if passion is one of the reasons why you’ve chosen this profession.

In conversation with Dr. Dana Dulgheru

How does it feel to have been part of the DENT ESTET community for so long?

I have been with DENT ESTET 4 KIDS since 2011, and in 2012 I also joined the DENT ESTET 4 TEENS team. This is because I have found here something that I believe no other dental clinic for children and teenagers in Romania can offer me.

It’s a professional challenge, and I’m delighted to be part of such a wonderful, young and dynamic team. They constantly give me energy.

What are the most common oral conditions that teenagers present with at the clinic? And what about children?

For both of these groups, the main problem is tooth decay. It is the most common reason why people come to see us.

In recent years, parents’ attitudes have changed, and I believe they will continue to evolve over time when it comes to their children’s oral health. They have become more interested in the educational and preventative aspects. Awareness of the need for a paediatric dentist, right from the moment the first teeth appear, will certainly reduce the number of young patients suffering from tooth decay.

When it comes to dental health, what challenges do adolescents face?

Unlike children, teenagers place great importance on their self-image and are therefore naturally interested in oral hygiene and aesthetics. After all, this is essential for a perfect smile.

How do you work with parents to involve them in looking after their children’s oral health?

My approach is simple. I always explain the reasoning behind each idea and outline the conditions their children might face if they do not follow the paediatric dentists’ recommendations.

For example, one of our recommendations is that a visit to the paediatric dentist should take place as soon as the first teeth appear. In this way, we can educate parents on proper oral care and prevent real complications: tooth decay, pain and tooth loss.

You are a highly respected doctor in our community. How have you built trust and respect amongst parents?

Step by step, with a great deal of patience. I have always been there for them and for the children whenever they were worried, whenever they wanted certain answers, or whenever they had various emergencies.

Do you use different techniques, depending on the age group (children/adolescents), to treat anxious patients?

Of course. Children undergo an astonishing transformation from infancy through to adolescence, and each stage has its own characteristics. With patients suffering from anxiety, it is important to understand why they are experiencing it.

If we feel that additional support is needed, we can consult the clinic’s psychologists and utilise adjunctive therapies, such as inhalation sedation, which is suitable for both children and teenagers.

Tell us briefly about a particular case.

For me, the most special cases are those involving children with special needs, because they require a completely different approach. I have fond memories of a little boy who, at the time, was the youngest premature baby to have recovered in Romania. Today, years later, he is a teenager and still my patient, preparing for orthodontic treatment.

I have seen many children with autism who have made incredible progress. The time and energy invested in these future adults is, by far, the greatest reward.

What do you think is the most important thing when it comes to building and maintaining a good relationship with colleagues?

Sharing is caring. I always support my colleagues, and communication is key to this process. I act as a mentor to some of them, which makes me very happy, as I can contribute to their professional development and offer them a different perspective.

I worked alongside Dr Irina Morariu even before joining DENT ESTET. We’ve built a strong relationship that continues to this day.

What do you like doing in your spare time?

I enjoy art, walking in the countryside and gardening. I love visiting new places and relaxing to the rhythm of my favourite songs.
