I chose dentistry because it is a field in which you can have a direct and visible impact on patients’ quality of life. During my time at university, whilst exploring the various branches of dentistry, I was struck by the cases of patients with periodontal disease. It struck me that many of them were facing premature tooth loss without fully understanding the causes of the disease or how it could be prevented and treated.
It was then that I realised that periodontology was the specialism I wanted to pursue, so that I could help patients maintain their oral health and self-confidence through early diagnosis, treatment and prevention.
When inflammation or infection occurs in the gums, it is not only the teeth that are affected; there may also be an impact on general health. In recent years, numerous studies have highlighted links between periodontal disease and various systemic conditions (diabetes, cardiovascular disease, rheumatic diseases, Alzheimer’s, etc.).
Therefore, gum health should not be viewed merely as a localised problem, but as an integral part of one’s overall health.
As well as the fact that periodontal disease can progress for a long time without causing pain, a lack of information also plays a significant role. Many patients are unaware that bleeding gums are a sign of the disease rather than a normal reaction. As a result, they only visit the dentist when they notice more obvious problems, such as gum recession, loose teeth or gaps appearing between their teeth.
That is why I believe that education and prevention are just as important as the treatment itself. The earlier patients recognise these signs and come in for a check-up, the better our chances are of controlling the disease and preserving their natural teeth.
Laser technology has brought about a major change in periodontal treatments, enabling us to act precisely on the target tissues – in other words, in a minimally invasive manner. The laser has a bactericidal effect, as well as a biostimulating effect (rapid healing).
For the dentist, it is a tool that complements conventional methods and helps to achieve predictable results and maintain them in the long term.
The main advantage of lasers is the way in which they transform the patient’s experience of dental treatment, making it much more pleasant and comfortable.
As a result of using lasers in periodontal therapy, the patient’s discomfort is reduced both during the procedure itself and in the post-operative period. This is due to the selective and conservative action of the laser.
Furthermore, the duration of procedures is reduced, and healing is faster.
Yes, there have been several such moments. I recall more complex cases which seemed unsolvable at first, but then the patients were surprised to find that their gums had stopped bleeding, that the discomfort had disappeared, and that they once again had healthy gums with a natural and harmonious appearance.
I have also had patients who suffered from tooth migration (a change in the position of the teeth) caused by periodontal disease, and periodontal treatment followed by orthodontic treatment allowed the teeth to be repositioned and an aesthetically pleasing and functional smile to be restored. For many of them, the final result was even more beautiful than they could have imagined.
Situations like these remind me that, beyond treating a condition, we help to improve our patients’ quality of life, comfort and self-confidence. This is one of the most rewarding aspects of the profession.
I enjoy reading; it helps me to relax and discover new perspectives. I also enjoy spending time in nature, travelling and exploring new places.
Equally important are the moments spent with my family and loved ones. All these activities enable me to return to my practice with enthusiasm, clarity and a desire to provide my patients with the best possible care.
