Philosophy

“If there is a fountain of youth, it has to be learning.” To quote Professor Chris Chang, a luminary in orthodontics, I believe that training in this field must be continuous because technology becomes increasingly sophisticated, and keeping up requires constant learning.

We have access to digitization for both diagnostic means (intraoral scanning, mandibular dynamics analysis with ModJaw®) and the ability to simulate results using advanced software. Moreover, new treatment techniques and innovative appliance designs with increased predictability and patient comfort are emerging. To offer these cutting-edge treatments, one must always remain a "student."

However, there is another important aspect. "As a doctor, you are just as good as your patient is." This means that the orthodontist must team up with the patient. This is the only way it works. If the other person doesn't fulfill their part successfully, the result is compromised.

In Dialogue with Dr. Iana Dilă

What do you love about your profession?

That we can brighten someone's day. That we are entrusted with so much trust, and this motivates us to be better!

What do you aim for in the treatments you perform?

In orthodontics, as in medicine in general, you must be rigorous: from patient anamnesis to analyses and measurements to result simulations, everything must be done meticulously so as not to miss anything. Without a correct diagnosis, the appropriate treatment cannot be established. Patients focus more on choosing the type of braces, but they don't always understand that this is just a tool, like using a pen or pencil to write.

What makes your approach unique?

It’s not necessarily unique, but I appreciate that, even though personal experience is an important asset, we must always stay connected to what's happening around us professionally, love specialty journals, and take advantage of the availability of online courses, which are much more accessible because you can take them anytime, whether you're at the office or at home, in the quiet of your home when the kids are asleep. 😊

What is the biggest misconception about orthodontic treatments?

It bothers me when I hear, "If I got to 40 with these teeth, why should I wear braces now?" I believe that caring for teeth has nothing to do with age, and aligned teeth, with unworn edges, and an uncensored smile is a true natural facelift, making us look younger and more serene.

What procedure defines your career?

Providing orthodontic treatments to adults. A patient is more likely to accept treatment for their child than for themselves. When I offered treatments with the customized lingual braces Incognito™, patients' only concern was whether it suited their situation. I met a new type of patient, one who is relaxed and eager to achieve the best result, without being stressed about the treatment duration.

In your 22 years of experience, how has your field evolved?

Let’s say that 22 years ago, there were 2-3 suppliers of orthodontic consumables, and now the offer is so vast that everything works in favor of providing the highest quality services, and we have everything we need at hand.

Have you noticed any changes in patients' perceptions of "braces"?

The nicest thing they say at the end of treatment is that they regret not starting it earlier and that now they are the most enthusiastic supporters of braces, recommending them to colleagues and friends.

Which digital technologies are your favorites?

For over 15 years, the customized lingual appliance Incognito™ has been at the top of my preferences, and now I equally recommend aligner treatments. The reason is the absence of emergencies and accidents that can ruin a vacation if you’re not careful with what you eat and a bracket comes loose, as is the case with fixed appliances. Wireless orthodontics is my favorite. 😊

What motivated you to specialize in orthodontics?

The desire to learn something new. What orthodontic appliances can do seems magical to me, even now.

How do you help patients improve their lives?

I like to present things balanced, to make the patient think about their options, the right timing, and the type of appliance that would fit their lifestyle. Ultimately, I believe our duty as doctors is to guide and accompany patients in resolving their needs, not to impose our own way of thinking. I’ve had many patients who returned after the consultation after setting their priorities, getting their lives in order, and being able to integrate orthodontic treatment.

Outside the clinic, how do you recharge your energy?

I love spending time outdoors, and I would spend all day in the park with my three-and-a-half-year-old son, David, who gladly swaps cartoons for a bike or scooter ride.
