Philosophy

“If there is a fountain of youth, it must be learning.” To begin with a quote from Professor Chris Chang, a leading authority in orthodontics, I believe that training in this field must be ongoing, because technology is becoming increasingly sophisticated, and this is the only way to keep up.
We now have access to digitalisation of diagnostic tools (intraoral scanning, analysis of mandibular dynamics with ModJaw®), as well as the ability to simulate outcomes using advanced software. Furthermore, new treatment techniques and innovatively designed appliances are emerging, offering greater predictability and comfort for the patient. And to be able to offer these state-of-the-art treatments, you must remain a ‘student’ forever.
But there is another important aspect. ‘As a doctor, you are only as good as your patient’ – meaning the orthodontist must work as a team with the patient. That is the only way it works. If the other person does not fulfil their part successfully, the result is compromised.”

In conversation with Dr Iana Dilă

What do you love about your job?

That we can brighten someone’s day. That people place so much trust in us, and that motivates us to be better!

What are you aiming for with the treatments you provide?

In orthodontics, as in medicine in general, you have to be thorough: from taking the patient’s medical history, through tests and measurements, to simulations of the outcome, everything must be done meticulously so that nothing is overlooked. Without a correct diagnosis, the appropriate treatment cannot be determined. Patients tend to focus more on choosing the type of braces, but they do not always realise that this is merely a tool, just as we use a pen or a pencil when writing.

What makes your approach unique?

It isn’t necessarily unique, but I do appreciate that, whilst personal experience is a major asset, we must always stay connected to what’s happening in the professional world around us, make the most of specialist journals, and take advantage of the fact that online courses are now available – they’re much more accessible because you can take them at any time, whether you’re at the practice or at home, in the peace and quiet of your own home, when the children are asleep. 😊

What is the biggest misconception about orthodontic treatment?

It annoys me when I hear people say, ‘If I’ve made it to 40 with these teeth, why should I bother with braces?’ I believe that looking after your teeth isn’t about age, and that straight teeth, with no chipped edges, and an uninhibited smile are a real natural facelift – they make us look younger and more serene.

Which procedure shapes your career?

Providing orthodontic treatment to adults.
Patients are more willing to accept treatment for their child than for themselves.
When I offered treatment using the Incognito™ customised lingual braces, the patients’ only concern was whether the treatment would suit their situation. I encountered a new type of patient: one who was relaxed and eager to achieve the best possible result, without being stressed by the duration of the treatment.

Over the course of your 22 years’ experience, how has your field of expertise evolved?

Let’s say that 22 years ago there were only two or three suppliers of orthodontic materials, whereas now the choice is so vast that everything works in favour of providing the highest quality services; we have everything we could possibly want right at our fingertips.

Have you noticed any change in patients’ perceptions of ‘braces’?

The nicest thing they say, once treatment is over, is that they regret not having started treatment sooner and that they are now the most enthusiastic advocates of braces, which they recommend to their colleagues and friends.

Of all the digital technologies, which is your favourite?

For over 15 years, the Incognito™ customised lingual braces have been my clear favourite, and now I am just as keen to recommend aligner treatment. The reason is the absence of emergencies or mishaps that can ruin your holiday if you’re not careful about what you eat and a bracket comes loose, as is the case with fixed braces. Wireless orthodontics is my favourite. 😊

What led you to choose orthodontics as your specialism?

The desire to learn something new. Even now, what braces can do still seems magical to me.

How do you help patients improve their lives?

I like to present things in a balanced way, to encourage the patient to think about the options available to them, at the right time, and the type of device that would suit their lifestyle. Ultimately, I believe that our duty as doctors is to guide and support patients in meeting their needs, not to impose our own way of thinking.
I have had many patients who returned after their consultation once they had established their priorities, got their lives in order and were able to fit in orthodontic treatment.

Outside the clinic, how do you recharge your batteries?

I really love being outdoors; I could spend the whole day in the park with my three-and-a-half-year-old son, David, who’s also happy to swap his cartoons for a ride on his bike or scooter.
