Dr. Marius Ion

Specialist Doctor – ORTHODONTICS AND DENTO-FACIAL ORTHOPAEDICS

About

Dr. Marius Ion is a specialist in Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopaedics at the DENT ESTET clinics in Brașov, Sibiu and Ploiești. He completed his residency programme at the ‘Emil Palade’ University of Medicine, Pharmacy, Science and Technology in Târgu Mureș because, as he told us, he likes to see everything aligned and perfectly symmetrical.

He turned his attention to dentistry, drawn to cosmetic dentistry, but above all by the desire to create beautiful smiles himself. The most challenging part of his day-to-day work is tailoring treatment solutions, as each patient’s needs and wishes are different. The smiles and joy seen at the end of treatments are the main sources of happiness for our dentist and what motivates him day after day to continue his professional development.

He enjoys travelling with his wife, savouring what the places they visit have to offer. He escapes the daily grind by heading to the mountains, where ATV rides push him to his limits; he loves sport and is a firm believer in a healthy lifestyle. He exercises as often as he can, as he draws positive energy from such activities.

Philosophy

“Orthodontics is closely linked to mathematics, because an orthodontist does not focus solely on the teeth and their position, but on the entire facial structure (teeth and bones), taking individualised measurements for each case. Thinking ahead and planning treatment from the moment the patient sits in the chair – that, to me, is what it means to be an orthodontist with vision.

We often encounter dental problems that have been put off for years, based on the assumption that ‘it’s fine as it is’. But any untreated condition has consequences, which can lead to tooth loss, so it is ‘better late than never’. It’s always a good idea to come and seek advice from an orthodontist about treating dental problems.”

Interview with Dr. Marius Ion

How would you define a successful outcome in orthodontics?

A successful outcome in orthodontics is achieved by establishing stable and balanced relationships in all three directions of tooth movement – transverse, sagittal and vertical – which characterise orthodontic treatment and are consistent with the functionality of the temporomandibular joint.

Treatment success cannot be achieved without a close doctor-patient relationship. Consequently, results are not long in coming, and the long-term effects are seen and felt by patients, who are transformed following orthodontic treatment, with both their self-esteem and self-confidence increasing.

What should I expect from a specialist orthodontic consultation?

An orthodontic consultation begins with a scan of the dental arches using an intraoral scanner, followed by diagnostic photographs and X-rays: an OPG and a teleradiograph, after which a treatment plan is drawn up.

In complex cases, where dental anomalies are accompanied by problems with the temporomandibular joints, we use digital technology, namely the Modjaw 4D scan, to carry out a functional assessment of mandibular movements and to identify the main factor that contributed to the development of the existing anomalies.

What piece of technology in the clinic could you not do without?

The intraoral scanner and Modjaw 4D. These are indispensable in modern orthodontics, as in the case of aligners, once the scan has been taken, the data is uploaded to the aligner manufacturer. Orthodontic aligners are manufactured abroad, so this scan – unlike a traditional alginate impression of the dental arches, which would be very difficult to get to the manufacturing plant and would likely be unusable – is sent in a matter of minutes, as everything is digital. No information is lost; everything is accurately and perfectly reproduced and transferred very quickly.

What is the most memorable reaction you have ever received from a patient?

“You’re the only dentist with whom I’ve spent the least amount of time in the chair and felt absolutely no pain,” a patient in his mid-thirties told me. It made me feel proud that I’d managed to gain his trust and that he was satisfied with how the treatment I’d carried out had gone.

Which aspect of digital orthodontics interests you the most?

Digital orthodontics is bringing increasingly efficient and innovative systems for straightening teeth. The introduction of ClearCorrect® by the Straumann Group, Spark® or Invisalign® in orthodontics brings added value to orthodontic treatment, allowing us to visualise the progress of treatment from start to finish and helping us to choose the ideal treatment for each individual case.

Patient comfort is significantly higher compared to fixed braces, which exert considerable pressure on the mouth, and which can also cause sores on the cheeks in more sensitive patients.

What is the biggest myth about orthodontics?

That braces cannot be fitted at an older age, as the treatment is ineffective or pointless. Orthodontic treatment is effective at any age, and yes, it is true that in adults the treatment progresses more slowly due to higher bone density than in children, but the important thing is that it works and can be carried out.

The long-term benefits include maximising the lifespan of natural teeth in the dental arch and preventing other dental problems that could even lead to premature tooth loss. I explain to patients that the benefits of orthodontic treatment for adults far outweigh the effort involved.

How do you collaborate with other disciplines or colleagues on complex treatment plans?

In complex cases, the treatment plan is presented at a meeting where we hold a joint discussion with all the relevant disciplines and determine the optimal course of treatment.

Orthodontics is often a preliminary stage in more complex cases prior to surgical intervention. For patients with an underbite (where the lower teeth are in front of the upper teeth), orthognathic surgery is the most optimal treatment option. The patient will be a changed person, both aesthetically – with their facial features undergoing a major transformation – and functionally.

The situation is reversed for patients with periodontal disease, where I require the consent and collaboration of a specialist periodontist before commencing the orthodontic phase. In such cases, tooth movement is carried out slowly using gentle forces, and the patient is continuously monitored by the periodontist.

What are your hobbies?

I enjoy travelling, I enjoy sport and a healthy lifestyle. I enjoy riding an ATV and I enjoy extreme activities that get the adrenaline pumping.
