Interview with dr. Ștefan Ciobanu

1. What inspired you to choose a career in medicine, and specifically in dentistry?

Ever since I was a child, I have been fascinated by the medical field, and the desire to help people has guided my career choices. The turning point came when I realised the impact that oral health has on quality of life. I met patients who avoided smiling because of dental problems, and I wanted to help change that. Dentistry combines medical precision with the art of dental aesthetics, and this blend of science and creativity particularly appealed to me.

2. What is your specialism in dentistry, and what made you choose it?

My speciality is orthodontics, a field that has captured my interest due to its profound impact on patients’ oral health and self-confidence. I chose orthodontics because it combines scientific precision with an artistic and functional aspect – shaping a healthy and harmonious smile is not just an aesthetic correction, but also an improvement in quality of life.

One of the decisive factors in choosing this specialism was the realisation of how occlusion and dental alignment influence not only the smile but also general health—from preventing joint and muscle problems to optimising chewing and speech. Furthermore, the satisfaction of seeing patients’ transformations and helping to boost their self-confidence motivated me to pursue this path.

3. Who do you admire most in the field of dentistry, and who inspires you?

I admire Dr Renato Cocconi, an internationally renowned orthodontist known for his innovative and interdisciplinary approach to orthodontic treatment. I am inspired by the way he manages to combine clinical precision with an exceptional aesthetic vision, helping to transform orthodontics into a speciality that is not only functional but also artistic.

Dr Cocconi is a professional role model thanks to his attention to detail, his collaboration with specialists from various fields, and his commitment to the education of orthodontists worldwide. His work has motivated me to develop my skills and to view every orthodontic case from a holistic perspective, taking into account not only the mechanical aspects but also facial harmony and the long-term impact on the patient.

4. What are the main challenges in dentistry, and how do you define a successful outcome?

One of the greatest challenges in dentistry is educating patients about the importance of prevention. Many people only visit the dentist when the problem has become advanced, which complicates treatment. Another challenge is maintaining a balance between aesthetics, functionality and oral health.

A successful outcome is not measured solely by the completion of the correct treatment, but by patient satisfaction, improved oral health and the positive impact on their life. Every case is unique, and success lies in tailoring solutions to each patient’s needs.

5. What would you like people to know about orthodontics? What does the future of dentistry look like in the field of orthodontics?

Many patients believe that orthodontics is merely a cosmetic solution, but in reality, it plays a vital role in dental health. A correct bite prevents abnormal tooth wear, joint problems and difficulties with chewing.

In the future, orthodontics will become increasingly digitalised and personalised, thanks to advanced technologies such as 3D scans, artificial intelligence and invisible orthodontic treatments. We will be able to predict and plan outcomes with greater precision, offering more comfortable and effective solutions for patients.

6. Which aspect of digital orthodontics interests you the most?

Digital orthodontics has revolutionised the way we plan and carry out treatments, and what fascinates me most is the precision and predictability that this technology brings to the practice. The use of 3D intraoral scans, simulation software and custom aligners allows for greater control over each case and significantly improves the patient experience.

Another fascinating aspect is the integration of artificial intelligence into diagnostic analysis and treatment planning, which leads to faster and more efficient results. The orthodontics of the future is digital, and the fact that I can be part of this evolution motivates me enormously.

7. In what ways is dentistry similar to art?

Dentistry, and orthodontics in particular, is a perfect blend of science and art. Just as a sculptor shapes a work of art, an orthodontist works with each patient to create a harmonious, well-proportioned and functional smile.

Every orthodontic case is unique, and the process of aligning teeth is not merely a mechanical correction, but a personalised adaptation of each facial feature to achieve a balanced result. Furthermore, dental aesthetics play an essential role, and attention to detail makes the difference between a good result and an exceptional one.

8. Choose three words that best describe you.

  • Meticulous – I like to pay attention to every detail, because precision makes all the difference in orthodontics.
  • Innovative – I embrace technology and am always looking for new ways to improve my patients’ treatments.
  • Empathetic – I understand the importance of a healthy smile for every patient and strive to offer them not just treatment, but also self-confidence.

9. What motivates you to always be innovative and avoid falling into a rut in your day-to-day work?

I am motivated by the constant evolution of orthodontics and the fact that every patient is unique. Every day I encounter different cases, new challenges and opportunities to learn and improve.

To avoid falling into a rut, I actively participate in training courses, conferences and exchanges of experience with leading specialists. Furthermore, technology in dentistry is evolving rapidly, and adapting to new treatment methods helps me stay motivated and offer my patients the most effective solutions.

10. Tell us a bit about yourself. What are you like when you take off your medical kit at the end of the day?

Outside of my work at the practice, I am a curious, creative person who is always on the lookout for new experiences. I love discovering new things, whether it’s an innovative orthodontic technique or a hobby that helps me relax.

I try to maintain a balance between my professional and personal life, because I know how important it is to have a positive and relaxed mindset. After a busy day at the practice, I like to unwind with activities that give me energy and inspiration.

11. What activities, places or people bring you joy and help you relax in your free time?

Travelling is one of my greatest passions – exploring new places and different cultures and traditions helps me switch off from my daily routine and see the world from a broader perspective. Whether it’s a getaway into the countryside, visiting a historic town or discovering a new cuisine, every experience contributes to my personal development.

I’m also passionate about outdoor activities, such as hiking or sports, which give me energy and mental clarity. I enjoy spending time in nature because it helps me recharge and return to work with a clearer and more creative mind.

Another important aspect for me is the time I spend with family and friends. Genuine relationships and meaningful conversations are essential for maintaining a balance between my professional and personal life

In addition, I enjoy reading and watching educational content, whether it’s self-help books, biographies of inspirational people, or talks on innovation and medicine. Continuous learning motivates me to stay up to date with the latest developments and maintain my passion for what I do every day.

In short, outside the clinic I am someone who values the balance between exploration, human connections and personal development, and all these aspects help me return each day with energy and inspiration to deliver the best results for my patients.
