Tooth decay is one of the most common conditions among children, and diet plays a key role in its development. Although sweets are often considered the main risk factor, other foods and drinks consumed on a daily basis can also contribute to tooth decay.
Appearing on the programme ‘Sănătate cu Stil’ on Prima TV, Dr. Dana Dulgheru, a specialist in paediatric dentistry at the DENT ESTET 4 KIDS clinics, explained why the frequency of sugar consumption is just as important as the quantity, and what steps parents can take to protect their children’s oral health.
As well as sweets, products containing ‘hidden’ sugar – such as juices, fizzy drinks, biscuits or dried fruit – can affect dental health when consumed frequently.
That is why prevention starts at home, by limiting sugar intake, sticking to a regular meal schedule, brushing teeth twice a day and attending regular dental check-ups. In this way, parents can help to establish healthy habits and maintain a healthy smile from the earliest years of life.
