If there’s one thing I truly believe in, it’s that beauty cannot be separated from health. As a rule, we women pay close attention to the health of our skin and hair, to the cosmetics we choose, and we invest in treatments that help us maintain a fresh and natural appearance. But do we pay the same attention to the health of our teeth and gums?
I believe we should. I think it’s important to treat dental check-ups with the same sense of responsibility as we do gynecological or dermatological check-ups, or other regular medical examinations.
Especially as, when we talk about a smile, it’s not just about white, beautiful teeth, but about the health of the entire mouth.
Recently, I’ve noticed that there’s been increasing talk about the link between oral health and general health, which is encouraging. In this context, I believe it is important to pay attention to gum health as well – an aspect that we often overlook.
Today, I’d like to address this topic, but from a much more personal perspective: my experience at DENT ESTET, where I’m currently undergoing a periodontal treatment plan.
More often than not, we go to the dentist when we have a problem, such as a cavity or a toothache. This is backed up by specialist studies, but we know it too. Or, due to a lack of time, we tell ourselves that nothing hurts and that a visit to the dentist can wait.
And yet, regular check-ups – and here I include periodontal assessments – are essential for our oral health. At any age.
Periodontal disease, also known as periodontitis, affects the tissues that support the teeth and can progress without obvious symptoms in its early stages. However, before periodontal disease sets in, gingivitis occurs.
Sometimes, the signs are so subtle that we might overlook them: bleeding when brushing, inflamed gums or occasional sensitivity.
I decided to book an appointment after noticing that my gums were bleeding slightly when I brushed my teeth. I wasn’t worried, but I wanted to understand what was happening. So I chose DENT ESTET, my partner for over 20 years, for a periodontal check-up.
At DENT ESTET, I met Dr Diana Beleni, a specialist in periodontology – a true professional who inspired my confidence from our very first interaction.
For me, it’s important to understand not only what treatment I’m undergoing, but also why each step is necessary. Dr Diana Beleni explained to me that, in order to resolve certain periodontal issues, several stages are required: assessment, treatment, checking the results and, above all, long-term care.
During the assessment stage, I was impressed by the new technologies. I learnt that there is a piece of software – Florida Probe – which allows the periodontist to check, in just a few minutes, whether there are any periodontal pockets and how deep they are, with millimeter precision. In this way, the dentist can provide an accurate diagnosis and an appropriate treatment plan.
In accordance with the treatment plan, during the first stage, I underwent subgingival treatments using Waterlase laser technology.
Dr Diana Beleni explained to me that the laser is the most effective method for removing bacterial deposits from the affected areas and controlling inflammation. The procedure is minimally invasive, is carried out under anaesthetic and didn’t take very long.
The doctor constantly checked that everything was fine, and I, in turn, assured her that I wasn’t feeling any pain.
The next stages will involve professional cleaning procedures using Swiss technology – the EMS Airflow Prophylaxis Master. This technology is recognised for its effectiveness in removing bacterial plaque and tartar without the patient experiencing any discomfort.
There is one point I would like you to bear in mind: periodontal treatment does not end with your final appointment at the clinic.
What happens after the procedures carried out at the clinic is just as important. This is because gum health depends not only on the dentist and the treatments we’ve had, but also on how well we look after our teeth at home.
I think there’s a very nice parallel here with skincare. We can’t achieve long-term results just by having treatment every now and then if we don’t have a proper routine at home. Consequently, daily oral hygiene and regular check-ups at the dentist are extremely important for maintaining healthy gums.
My experience at DENT ESTET is still ongoing, and this is something I want to emphasise. I’m not telling you about a final result, but about a treatment process that I’ve chosen to follow carefully and responsibly.
I encourage you not to wait until you experience pain or obvious problems before having your gum health checked. A specialist consultation can provide important information about the condition of your gums and any necessary treatments.
And if I were to leave you with just one thought, it would be this: a beautiful smile isn’t just about beautiful teeth. It’s, first and foremost, about healthy teeth and gums.
And I believe it’s worth looking after them as early as possible.
